Talk on the Future of Energy: Sustainability and Competitiveness for Italy

Today, we are taking centre stage at a major event focusing on our country’s energy future.

Gianmaria Zanni, Group Energy COO of the AFV Beltrame Group, is speaking at the closing round table discussion entitled “Sustainability goals and competitive advantage for businesses”, moderated by Edoardo Vigna, Head of Pianeta 2030 at Corriere della Sera.

A high-level discussion with representatives from the industrial, scientific and institutional sectors, to discuss the role of alternative energy sources in the context of innovation, research and the economic sustainability of the system.

“In the steel industry, energy accounts for more than 30% of operating costs and is, in fact, the second-highest cost after scrap, our raw material. Given the significance of energy costs, diversifying our energy sources is not an abstract strategic choice but something we at AFV Acciaierie Beltrame have been developing over recent years. This is why we have begun to approach energy with the same rigour we apply to our production processes: measurable objectives, defined timeframes, and clear KPIs. “For us, the switch to alternative sources is not a leap of faith in the transition, but a concrete response to achieve three specific objectives: reducing energy costs, stabilising energy prices by making them less volatile in the face of increasingly unpredictable markets, and reducing Scope 2 indirect emissions. All of this boosts the company’s competitiveness in an increasingly complex market, but we are not stopping at these results. “We are working on BESS projects to increase self-consumption, we are negotiating biomethane supply contracts, and finally, energy efficiency remains of fundamental importance,” explained Zanni.

Our thanks go to RCS Academy and Corriere della Sera for creating a space for meaningful dialogue between businesses, institutions and the research community on one of the most strategic issues for Italy.
