Water as a strategic lever for sustainability in the steel industry

Water is a strategic resource in steel production, and managing it efficiently reduces environmental impact, improves production efficiency and strengthens business resilience.

Today, we will be attending the Study Day ‘Water footprint – a strategic lever for sustainable steelmaking’ to be held in Bergamo at the Kilometro Rosso Innovation District, to share our experience and main projects in the field of water resource management, one of the pillars of sustainability defined by the Group.

‘The value of water goes beyond the cubic metres saved: it represents a company’s ability to combine production efficiency, environmental protection and responsibility towards the local area. It is on this vision that we are building Beltrame’s sustainability path,’ said Giovan Battista Landra, Group Sustainability & Environment Director.

‘The Group already integrates water management into its ESG strategy and, thanks to technological investments and continuous monitoring, the Vicenza plant has managed to reduce water withdrawals by 10% over the last two years, meeting the set target,’ explains Andrea Costa, Group Sustainability Supervisor.

Process water is managed in cascading circuits to reduce waste and optimise resource use. We have installed air cooler systems that partially replace the use of water with an air cooling system, and we are currently studying the reuse of treated rainwater as process water. These are examples of the Group’s commitment and focus on the continuous improvement of industrial processes through increasingly efficient and rational use of resources,” adds Gian Maria Pasqualin, AFV Environment Manager.
