The Federacciai Assembly in Vicenza

The Federacciai Assembly was held in Vicenza, anticipated in the morning by siderweb FORUM 2024, a supply chain comparison event to discuss the present and future of Italian and European steel.

Federacciai President Antonio Gozzi spoke of the balance between threats and opportunities, referring to the current complex geopolitical and economic situation. He reiterated that, for some time now, Italian steelmakers have all been committed to ambitious decarbonisation and circularity strategies, and how our country has all the cards to become the world’s first carbon-neutral steelmaker by 2030.

But there is no shortage of challenges, from the protection of scrap exports to high energy costs, from EU policies, which we expect to be more incisive, to competition from China and a market demand that remains weak.

In spite of all this, the Italian steel industry remains at the top of the national economic system, providing employment for over 70 thousand workers, with a production of 21.1 million tonnes in 2023 and a total turnover of between 50 and 60 billion euro per year, ranking second in Europe only behind Germany.

Hence the appeal to young people: ‘Try to continue on the trajectory of innovation and investment that has always characterised us. Never lose your passion for the factory, pursue efficiency, economic results and profit in your companies, but also inclusion and social justice’.
