LCA & Recyclability

The Environmental Product Declaration (known as EPD® – Environmental Product Declaration) is a voluntary product certification scheme, developed pursuant to ISO 14025 (Type III environmental labeling), according to the International EPD System Program and validated by independent third-party bodies.

These declarations relate to environmental impacts that may be associated with the product’s life cycle and are assessed through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), so as to ensure transparency, objectivity and comparability of the results

expressed, relating to the environmental performance of products. The information contained in the EPD is informative/communicative in nature on environmental performance, and there are no prescriptive performance thresholds.

The Group has prepared the life cycle analysis and prepared an environmental product declaration of the hot-rolled merchant profiles, produced in the Italian and French plants, as well as for reinforcing bar in coils, produced by the Swiss subsidiary and SBQ profiles produced in the Donalam srl plant in Calarasi, each referable to a specific environmental product declaration.

The EPD declarations of the Group’s products have been validated and registered under the main international schemes (International EPD® System and IBU – Institut Bauen und Umwelt).

With reference to the impact assessments that emerge from the life cycle analysis and that are traced back to standard indicators, EPD is used in the Group as an operational support in the continuous improvement process, when it allows to identify areas of intervention

in the various stages of the production process, supply chain and supply to customers. This declaration is also a starting point for the identification of the carbon footprint of products (GWP- Global Warming Potential)

In the Italian context, the validation of the environmental declaration of comes to meet the requests of some national customers, related to “green” public purchasing and supply, for which the minimum environmental criteria of products intended for construction are considered satisfied when they have a Type III Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), which complies with the UNI EN 15804 standard and the ISO 14025.

Another key element supporting the unique circularity of the electric furnace steel supply chain is the declaration of the recycled material content present in finished products. This statement, consistent with the UNI EN ISO 14021 standard, identifies the percentage of materials from recovery cycles used in the production process of Beltrame Group’s rolled products, which is consistently above 95 percent.
