It was a pleasure to attend the Gruppo Danieli Innovaction Meeting at their HQ in Buttrio, Italy, where almost 700 steel industry professionals, producers, experts, and media gathered to discuss the future of the industry.
Congratulations for the depth and breadth of the discussions and the inspiring presentations.
According to Carlo Beltrame, speaker at the event: “#Decarbonisation must start from the market. Clear criteria of what is “green” and what is not must be defined. It is also important to have a mandatory legislative framework for green and recycled product purchases. Today, Europe is mainly focused on granting funds to big companies, creating a further technology gap between large and small (unaided) firms. There is a lot of attention towards the plans for reducing hashtag#CO2emissions and to sustainable products from primary steelmaking plants, while less consideration is shown for #EAF (Electric Arc Furnace) steel processes, which are already more sustainable not only because of their lower carbon footprint.
Are there possible solutions? Let’s start with concrete actions: strenghten European scrap market for EU use, inserting scrap inside the strategic raw material, “buy Europe” as a model to be applied asap considering the great success of “buy American” and not just for public procurement, level playing field for subsidies”.
