20 May: World Bee Day

The UN designated 20 May as #WorldBeeDay, to raise awareness of the importance of pollinators, the threats they face and their contribution to #sustainabledevelopment.

The goal is to strengthen measures aimed at protecting bees and other pollinators.

In AFV Beltrame Group, in our Swiss (Stahl Gerlafingen) and French (L.M.E.) plants, we have some beehives, we produce honey and candles with beeswax which are donate to employees.

After the big bloom in spring, bees often find it difficult or impossible to find their vital food from the end of May. Wild bees are also not long-distance fliers and need food sources and nesting sites in the immediate vicinity. But they often search for them in vain.

With the targeted creation of flowering areas and diverse habitats, we are committed to ensuring that bees feel at home here and find their livelihoods. The wildflower meadow planted here creates a rich food supply of nectar and pollen in the otherwise otherwise flower-poor summer months. The native seed mixture contains many plant species.

This diversity also offers specialised wild bee species suitable forage plants. We mow the meadow late and leave strips for insects to retreat to. The patchy vegetation of the meadow creates open patches of ground, which the majority of native wild bees need for nesting.

With our #commitment, we secure flowering plants and nesting opportunities that are essential for pollinators and thus contribute to the protection of bees and the preservation of this important basis for us all.
