Yesterday\u2019s Siderweb <\/a>event provided an important opportunity to reflect on the future of the European steel industry. During the afternoon panel discussion, \u201cPrices and Outlook for the Italian and International Steel Markets\u201d, Enrico Fornelli<\/a>, CCO of the Beltrame Group, shared some strategic insights into the path the sector is currently taking.<\/p>\n

2026 will mark a crucial phase: new trade and environmental regulations will profoundly reshape the sector. There are two main pillars of this transformation: #sustainability and protection of the internal market.<\/p>\n

On the environmental front, #decarbonisation represents the most radical change, accelerated by the objectives of the European Green Deal. The traditional blast furnace model will be gradually replaced by electric furnaces increasingly powered by renewable energy and, in the future, by hydrogen.<\/p>\n

Italy is starting from a position of strength. As highlighted by the President of Federacciai, Professor Gozzi, over 90% of Italian steel is already produced using state-of-the-art EAF furnaces.<\/p>\n

Another key issue will be #scrap, set to become an increasingly important raw material. Growing global competition to secure its availability will inevitably lead to new industrial considerations. As highlighted by Fornelli, scrap now represents the true \u2018black gold of the steel industry\u2019.<\/p>\n

The most critical challenge remains: the cost of #energy. Europe continues to face higher energy costs than the United States, China and India, and within Europe itself, Italy\u2019s costs are higher than those of other countries.<\/p>\n

On the commercial front, the introduction of the CBAM and safeguard quotas aims to protect the European market and support the development of green steel. Whilst low-carbon steel initially represented added value, it is now rapidly becoming a standard demanded by the market.<\/p>\n

We see this in practice with #Chalibria, our certified carbon-neutral steel, which continues to grow year on year.<\/p>\n

The European steel industry will likely be smaller in terms of volume, but also more advanced, efficient and specialised. A sector where competitiveness and profit margins will depend less and less on volume and increasingly on innovation, sustainability and energy efficiency.<\/p>\n\t\n
